Earlier this year we posted a sneak peek of Darcy and Kent’s Oahu Wedding at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa at Ko Olina. We were so excited to be able to shoot their wedding after Adam had done their beautiful Pasadena Engagement Session. Plus, photographing a wedding in Hawaii is never a bad thing. =)
You might have seen in the sneak peek that Darcy and Kent’s wedding took place just a day after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Luckily, no damage was done where the wedding was taking place in Ko Olina. But, most of Darcy’s family was flying in from Taiwan (where Darcy is from) and they were supposed to connect in Japan the day of the earthquake. At first, it looked like they wouldn’t be able to make it! Luckily, Darcy was able to find a last minute flight for them from Taiwan to San Francisco and then they would fly on to Oahu, Hawaii. Fortunately, her family made it to the hotel just a few hours before the wedding began.
Something that I thought was kind of cool (this is Amber by the way… hi!), was that the Ihilani is right next door to the new Disney Resort, Aulani, that was under construction at the time. Faith and I love our Disney. =) I was hoping we would be able to stay there, but today is actually opening day. So, we only missed it by a few months.
A tradition we love is how the parents decorate the couple in beautiful gold jewelry. While we have seen brides wearing it at other traditional weddings, this was the first time we were able to photograph the family giving the jewelry to the bride and groom. Darcy was decorated by her family with beautiful gold necklaces, rings and bracelets. Traditionally, the pair of solid gold bracelets have designs of double happiness or long life characters, or the dragon and phoenix representing the emperor and empress, which the couple symbolize for the day.
Kent got in on the gold jewelry tradition as well when Darcy’s mom and brother presented him with these rings just before the start of the wedding ceremony.
One of the things we love about wedding photography in Hawaii is the incredible vibrant colors. Look at the greens and blues in Darcy and Kent’s wedding photographs! Love it! It is hard to get a bad photo with a location like this.
So many couples we know would love to get married in Hawaii. After photographing a wedding in Oahu, it isn’t difficult to see why. Darcy and Kent, your Hawaiian wedding was absolutely gorgeous and we are honored to have been a part of it. Congratulations!
